Kaoru just can't take Die's and Toshiya's obnoxious flirting anymore, so he decides to do something about it.

“Calm down, babe,” came Kaoru’s voice from the armchair, amusement replaced by a gentle warning.

Making another angry grab for his beer, Die curled his fingers around the neck until his knuckles turned white. “Don’t tell me what to do and don’t fucking ‘babe’ me!” he exclaimed, his usual sweet and soft tenor taking on a high, aggravated pitch that rung in his own ears.

Had he been only slightly less high, or had he been a person who could brush past temptation when presented with it, or had he remembered at that point that this was his best friend’s boyfriend, a person he wasn’t supposed to pursue, he wouldn’t have given in. But as it was, Toshiya was high as a kite, his resolve was weak on the best of days anyway, and he was so very much in love with this man, just as much as he was with Kaoru, or maybe just with the idea of him and Die and Kaoru, together...

“Yeah, well, you know, Die seemed to deliberately try to get you worked up, but all you do is just eat your food.” Kyo shrugged again. “I don’t get how you guys made it to stay together for so long. Do you get each other at all?”

Which was quite a show if you were Kaoru Niikura, an odd guy with low standards since he didn’t think too much of himself.

“If she didn’t believe it, it’s because you don’t love me enough so your Yakisoba will have to wait.” “Ye’ll deny me food for not lookin’ smitten enough? Not only am I in a relationship I didn’t know about, it’s an abusive one, too?”

“You’re an awful boyfriend, apparently.” “Break up with me, I dare ye.” Not that this wasn’t fun in some weird, removed way, but it kept getting more and more complicated and was pointless and childish to begin with.

“Aww”, Die cooed, “I take back my statement that you’re an awful boyfriend.” “Don’t worry, I’m awful in many ways.” Not that he was proud of it. It was just a fact that he wasn’t the most sociably apt person.

“AM NOT”, Kaoru burst out, “It was a legitimate question.” “I can tell you’d like to be the first one.” “Am I not??” “You’re my one and only.” “So ye’re having secrets. This is the worst relationship ever.” “Oh my god! Fine, I tried it twice okay? Now calm your little man boobs, it was never serious.”

It took the leader a second to realize what had cut him off. It certainly hadn’t been just the footsteps. For the moment, he didn’t care who heard what and he thought, for a second, that Die had put his hand over his mouth to silence him. Only, this was not a hand. And in theory, he also knew the difference between breaking away to express your shock and disagreement with said lips, and kissing back, but he must have gotten those two mixed up in the… heat of the moment. Shit happens.

“Are you trying to blackmail me into falling in love with you, now?” Kaoru threw his hands in the air in outrage. “Obviously I'm not!” “What if it was working, though?”

“I wasn't. You just don't pay me any attention because you only got eyes for that poor man's Rapunzel” “Poor man's...tsk”, he had been about to laugh, but caught himself in time to scoff instead. No Die-slander on his watch.

“Toshiya and Shinya, you and Die... And me: lonely, left out, doomed to be alone. Ever the fifth wheel...”

“I knew from the moment I scouted Toshiya that I was bringing in not just a bassist but also a future husband for our youngest daughter.”

“Really? Him?” Kaoru frowned. That didn't quite add up. “I thought he's all supportive of the ABCDE stuff.” “LGBTQ+” “Bless ye.” He received a rather incredulous shake of the head for this, before he was ushered to a free table. “Anyway he wasn't appalled by the idea of us together, obviously, just by the fact that I'm deceiving a woman”, Die explained.

“So, what do we know?” Toshiya started, sounding excited. “What do you mean what do ye know?”, Kaoru asked, feeling a sense of foreboding looming over the table. “I'm imagining you both talked to me about your feelings before you got together”, Toshiya said with a wistful sigh. “Sure, why not?”, Die agreed with a shrug and Toshiya beamed at him. “I drunkenly confessed to you that I had a crush on someone in the band, like, five years ago.” “Oh yes, and I immediately assumed your still into Shinya and I got super jealous, and it took me weeks to find out who you were talking about because you wouldn't tell me anything sober.” Clearly the bassist was already a fan of the whole plot... Hold on a second.

“Obviously I'm not cheating either”, Kaoru grunted, rolling his eyes. Like he would have the energy to cheat when Die got him off four times a week. Absurd. Also maybe stop thinking about this particular detail at every corner. “I don't take either of you to be the type to cheat”, Shinya conceded, “I think the vibe stems from the fact that you're in the mindset of having to pretend to be in a happy relationship, which is what a couple would do if they had to postpone discussing their issues.” Amazing, how everyone on the table seemed to give this so much thought...

The melody that flowed from his fingers was unfamiliar, nothing Kaoru recognized, but it carried a feeling of something distant and aching, with a ghost of longing that clung to every note. Kaoru turned toward him, quiet and attentive, letting the music wash over him. When Die finally let the final note fade, he gave a sheepish laugh and shook his head woefully, “No one’s wanted to use it, so I’m stockpiling them.”

“That brightness, when someone talks about what they love… I really like that.” His gaze returned to Kaoru’s, “What about you?”

“I don’t know what I like,” Kaoru’s voice is surprisingly tender. His eyes slid sideways to meet Die’s, a coy smile curling against his dark-painted lips. “I scare them away. I suppose I like someone who doesn’t run from me.”

What is he doing!? Die’s brain all but exploded. Why does he look like that while saying something like that?!

He could certainly tell himself that again and again, because he'd had practice. So many years without the blazing inferno of eternal love at least brought a certain numbness when it came to repressing hindering thoughts. He was too old for anything else. What he needed was plenty of sleep, good food, his health, music, and yes, his two offspring weren't the worst people in the world either.

Er sollte wissen, dass er gerade ein Fels in nicht nur der Brandung, doch einem tosenden Sturm war, der unumstößlich ebenso zur Beständigkeit in Dies Leben beitrug. Er war eine Konstante.

He should know that he was a rock in not just the surf, but a raging storm, one that irrefutably contributed to the stability of Die's life. He was a constant.

“I'm not at all surprised that you're here right away. You've probably been waiting for this day.” She said these words with contempt, looking Kaoru straight in the eyes.

But he was just as good at it and simply stared back before replying without changing his expression: “I have no idea what you're talking about.”

Sometimes his memories blended with those from back in the club, as if instead of the man with the gray stubble on his chin, a cheeky young Kaoru with purple hair was now grinning at him. But Die knew it was just the alcohol.

But before he could leave, Die grabbed Kaoru's thin wrist and held him there. “When you were unfaithful... was that with men?”

Crazy how quickly you could feel sober, Kaoru thought, his pulse racing just because someone had finally caught on to him.

Die couldn't believe he had to ask. After all, he'd revealed so much about himself. He sighed pityingly and looked directly at the other man. “You're an idiot if you don't get it.”

Notes: “Leave a Light On” is a song that basically says, “Leave the light on, because I have to go and hope you're waiting for me.” Well, that's not quite true here. It's more like, “Leave the light on, so I can find my way back to you.”

Yes, hello, sometimes Kaoru also realized that he was gay.

現今常見的木吉他，普遍都是六條或十二條琴絃，但亦有四絃、八絃、十絃的型式。而其整體由「琴頭」、「琴頸」、「琴身」三大部份所組成，以下將針對這三大部份的諸元及其作用逐一說明：

琴頭 (Head)：琴頭的主要作用，在於支撐吉他前端的琴弦張力。而在外觀的設計上，琴頭正面多半會印有吉他的品牌標誌；有些客製化的吉他，則會在琴頭嵌上裝飾圖案；有些吉他則會在琴頭外緣嵌上護邊。琴頭與琴頸交界之處，也是很脆弱的部位，很容易因為碰撞而發生斷裂。

弦鈕 (Tuning Heads)：有齒輪式及油壓式兩種，主要用來調整琴弦的張力。琴弦張力愈高，聲調也愈高，反之則愈低。弦鈕的材質，以塑膠-金屬、木材-金屬的組合較為常見。

上弦枕 (Nut)：置於琴頭與琴頸的交接處，主要用來維持吉他前端琴弦和指板間的距離。弦枕上會有淺溝用以固定琴弦位置，防止滑動。弦枕的常見材質，有塑膠、駝骨、牛骨、塑鋼以及金屬等。

琴頸：琴頸和指板的材質與音色息息相關。楓木(maple)琴頸能產生明亮的聲音，並大大增強大琴體吉他的高頻表現，而桃花心木(mahogany)則會將整體音色變得更為溫暖，更具木質感。

指板：指板也對整體音色有所影響，雖然它的作用就像蛋糕上的糖衣，而不是蛋糕本身。巴西玫瑰木，以及與它相近的熱帶雨林類似木種，能增加亮度與延音，而印度玫瑰木則能夠讓中頻更肥厚。基本上只有黑檀木（Ebony）可以用在音樂會琴上，上品的黑檀木顏色烏黑而帶光澤，密度及硬度均十分高，作為指板也確實是很好的材料。產地以非洲的較好，而其他熱帶地區亦有生 產，但一般均缺少光澤，密度亦稍有不如。

琴身 (Body)：亦可稱為共鳴箱，木吉他賴以發聲的關鍵之處，其整體係由面板、側板及背板所接合而成。相較於琴頭與指板，琴身的面積較為寬廣，因此也是廠商常用來展現吉他裝飾藝術的重點部位。面板與背板皆是平面，但有部份木吉他因為外觀設計、聲響效果或木材用料的因素，其背板會有些微的弧度。而面板、側板及背板的木料選用，則是影響吉他音色與響度的決定性因素。

面板 (Top)：吉他琴體的每個部份各有所長，只是影響有深有淺，一般觀點而言，決定吉他音色表現的因素中，面板，似乎造就了琴體對於彈奏的反應，反應的速度、延音的長短、泛音的音色，以及每個音符基本音色的力度和質感。大部分的製琴師(不是全部)認為，面板用材對於樂器的音色，有著決定性的影響。常見面板材料如：桃花心木(mahogany)、紫檀木(rosewood)、楓木(maple)、黑壇木(ebony)以及松木(spruce) 面板可分為單板及合板，單板是由一整塊完整的木材所製成，音色與各方面表現都遠大於合板；合板是由品質較差的木材或是木屑以人工的方式壓合而成，音色與各方面表現較差，但因售價便宜，常用於給初學者的入門琴，其特色是琴身會特過噴漆上色，色彩較為多樣化，而單板琴多數不會這樣做（漆會影響音色的表現），而是顯現木材的原色。

琴橋 (Bridge)：與指板一樣，多是以質地堅硬且密度高的木料製作，主要用來支撐吉他的後段琴弦張力，並透過下弦枕把琴弦的振動傳遞至面板。琴橋上會有一個細長型的溝槽，用來放置下弦枕及拾音器；另外也會有數個圓孔排成一列或二列，用來安裝琴弦及弦釘；而圓孔的個數，則是依琴弦數量來決定。如同指板與音色的關係一般，琴橋的用料，對於整體音色沒有太大作用，但是對於琴體其他部分的音色，有所加強或影響。而琴橋在面板上的位置，是決定吉他音準的因素。

下弦枕 (Saddle)：常見的製作材料為塑膠、獸骨 (牛骨、駝骨、象牙) 或是塑鋼與金屬。下弦枕對吉他音色的影響程度，佔大部份，其主要作用是將琴弦的振動傳遞至琴橋，並決定琴弦與指板的間距。

弦釘 (Bridge pin)：亦稱為弦栓，多以塑膠製作(所反映音質最差)，而市面上也有黑檀木或其它材質的弦釘，其作用是固定安裝在琴橋上的琴弦及傳遞弦上的震動去琴身而產生音響。弦釘材質對吉他音色的有一定的影響。

響孔 (Sound Hole)：吉他發聲的主要部位，當琴弦振動時，其振動所產生的聲音頻率，會透過下弦枕傳遞至琴橋，再由琴橋傳遞至面板，接著再擴散至側板及背板，最後在琴身內部逐漸形成共鳴，並透過背板將聲音反射到響孔外。
